¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ — There was an increased police presence at Talbot County schools on Monday amid social media rumors, though there's been "no credible threat uncovered," according to Sheriff Joe Gamble.
In a Facebook post Monday evening, Gamble wrote that police have been working with the Talbot County Public Schools district "for several weeks concerning a non-criminal mental health situation that began to surface a few weeks ago."
An individual, who has not been publicly identified, has been ordered not to trespass on school property. Gamble indicated that police know the person's whereabouts but that "no crime has been committed."
In an email to parents, families and staff on Sunday evening, TCPS Superintendent Sharon Pepukayi wrote that the district had been made "aware of a situation in which a member of our school community has made statements that some have found concerning."
Pepukayi wrote that there would be "additional safety measures" while the situation is addressed, along with increased law enforcement beginning Monday.
"At this time, there is no direct threat to our schools or community members," Pepukayi wrote Sunday. "We recognize that situations like this can cause concern, and we are committed to keeping you informed and to maintaining a safe, calm environment for all."
On Monday, the sheriff said his deputies have worked "around the clock" to investigate many rumors, including a picture posted to Facebook. Rumors of "an attempted purchase of a firearm" are not true, Gamble wrote.
"This office will continue to proactively monitor and investigate any changes and continue to collaborate with TCPS for the safety of our school community," Gamble's statement read.
