DENTON — At its July 8 meeting, the Caroline County Commissioners took the following actions:
Dr. Derek Simmons and CFO Jill Hignutt, Caroline County Board of Education, presenting their adopted fiscal year 2026 budget. Hignutt and Simmons explained multiple numbers within their budget including increasing administrators salaries to become competitive with neighboring counties. The commissioners also discussed Lockerman Middle School and the potential new location. Simmons said the Board of Education will keep a close working relationship with the commissioners throughout the process.
Lori Bishop and Charlotte Brown provided an update on the addition to 4-H Park. The addition is almost complete, but the bathrooms failed inspection due to sinks being too tall and toilets being to far from the wall.
Daniel Fox discussed Opioid Settlement Fund with the county commissioners. The county received $358,000 in local direct payments and $515,000 in target aid grants for opioid settlement. The county plans to talk with other departments and agencies to see how the fund will properly assist on a one-time basis.
The county conducted the second reading and public hearing for an emergency bill on wastewater treatment facilities. The bill will allow for non-accessory wastewater treatment facilities to be permitted by special use exception, provided the facilities hold MDE discharge permits for five years and the proposed application is similar to the previous application. The Planning Commission had a positive recommendation. The commissioners moved the discussion to a third reading at their next meeting.
During the county administration report, Kathleen Freeman told the commissioners about a conversation she had with Robbie Gill about a new YMCA in Caroline County. The commissioners are adamant about getting a new YMCA in Caroline County and believe the conversations need to turn into building.
