GREENSBORO 鈥 The Greensboro Historical Society has found its new location just blocks away from its current location, where the town said in June that the historical society could not longer keep its offices and artifacts.
After months of discussion, the Greensboro Town Council voted on June 5 to give the historical society 120 days to vacate the Weaver Building.
Longtime Caroline County resident William Satterfield will allow the historical society to rent his building on Sunset Avenue, which in the 1960s was a bar and a hardware store.
The historical society was first told about a potential move out of the Weaver Building in March, when officials raised the need for more space to house town agencies. The town determined the building could be used to house either the police department or the town employees鈥 office, but the council has leaned toward moving the police department.
With the move on the horizon, historical society Acting President Robert Moser talked to society staff and members about what is needed to ensure a safe relocation.
While no official move date is set because of new location repairs, the historical society will create a packing committee; a new location cleaning and repair committee; a moving committee; and a building, management and security committee.
The committees will be made of historical society members and community members. The historical society is asking community members to donate boxes, bubble wrap and their time to help.
鈥淲e鈥檙e going to reach out to people within the community, and hopefully word of mouth from friend, to friend to friend gets people out there an opportunity to come and help,鈥 Moser said.
鈥淲e鈥檝e had quite a few people reach out to us in regards to letting us know when the move is going to happen or what they can do and how they can help us facilitate the move,鈥 he said.
In addition to the move, the historical society is set to hold its biggest fundraiser of the year on Sept. 19.
The 22nd annual Greater Greensboro Open golf tournament is low on sign-ups right now, Moser said, but the historical society hopes for good participation to help with costs at the new location.
鈥淚t is our largest fundraiser in the year, which is going to be very important for us now since we have different utilities, internet and all that stuff that was provided to us through the town for the past seven years is now going to be our responsibility to pay,鈥 Moser said.
