CENTREVILLE — Maryland State Police are investigating two fatal crashes that occurred late Saturday in Queen Anne’s and Kent counties, police said.
Around 11:22 p.m. Saturday, troopers from the Maryland State Police Centreville Barrack responded to the area of northbound U.S. Route 301 at Hayden Clark Road in Centreville for a report of a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle, police said.
The operator of the motorcycle, identified as Marcus Dangerfield, 20, of Dover, Delaware, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver of a GMC Acadia, a 45-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. A passenger in the SUV, a 38-year-old woman, was flown by Maryland State Police Aviation Command to the same hospital.
The preliminary investigation indicates the GMC was traveling east on Hayden Clark Road, attempting to cross northbound U.S. Route 301, when it was struck by the motorcycle for unknown reasons, police said.
U.S. Route 301 was closed for more than two hours for the crash investigation. Assistance at the scene was provided by the Church Hill Fire Department, Queen Anne’s County emergency medical services and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration.
Around 11:55 p.m. Saturday, troopers from the Centreville Barrack responded to Maryland Route 213 and Riley’s Mill Road in Chestertown for a report of a single-vehicle crash, police said.
A passenger in a Ford Fusion, a 17-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver, a 19-year-old woman, was flown by Maryland State Police Aviation Command to the Shock Trauma Center for treatment of her injuries. Three other passengers — a 21-year-old woman, a 17-year-old boy and a 23-year-old woman — were transported by ambulance to University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown, police said.
As of Sunday morning, police had not released the names of those involved in the Kent County crash.
The preliminary investigation indicates the Ford was traveling south when, for unknown reasons, it left the roadway onto the right shoulder, lost control, struck a telephone pole and overturned, police said. Investigators believe impairment may have been a factor.
Maryland Route 213 was closed for more than two hours. Assistance at the scene was provided by the Chestertown Fire Department, Kent County emergency medical services and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the active and ongoing investigations into both crashes, police said.
