DENTON — Tuesday, March 25, is a big day for the future of Denton Plaza.
On Tuesday, Black Oak Associates, owner’s agent for the plaza, will present major site changes to the Denton Planning Commission.
According to Don Mulrine, Denton town administrator, the plan includes two new buildings for a Rite Aid and an automotive store. Dollar Tree and Petco have agreed to move in, and the former Roses site will be demolished and replaced with eight store fronts facing Legion Road.
“They’re going to remove most of what the old Roses was and build anew,†Mulrine said.
According to Mulrine, two tenants other than Petco and Dollar Tree have already agreed to move into the new store fronts. Mulrine said Black Oak has a contractual obligation to get the new stores in Denton Plaza soon.
“This is not the first time this project has been before (the planning commission). It’s the final phase,†Mulrine said. “Unless there’s something that the commission was not advised of or they try to change something, it should go through the process relatively normal.â€
Once approved, work should begin soon. Denton Plaza will be transformed and feature a new facade. Peebles was rumored to join Denton Plaza, but that’s not necessarily the case according to Mulrine.
“They put a Peebles out there as a reference,†Mulrine said of Black Oak. “It doesn’t mean they’re coming. Maybe it’s a Marshalls. Maybe it’s a Kohl’s. There’s a lot of possibilities to go in there because it’s a lot of real estate. … Their marketing is showing the need for this in this area which is great.â€
Mulrine said 38 jobs were lost when Roses closed. Changes to Denton Plaza will bring those jobs back, and bolster Denton’s economy.
“You’re giving the Caroline County-Denton area and other areas a place to shop instead of taking our shopping to Easton, Talbot County, Queen Anne’s County or even Delaware,†Mulrine said. “We were blessed with Walmart. There’s 300 jobs. There’s 300 opportunities. Yes, Roses closed. It was a big loss. Roses had a great niche for our folks. ... Having these possibilities and more employment, especially for our young, it’s a great opportunity. You have to commend Black Oak.â€
The Domino’s at Denton Plaza closed recently, but is moving to another part of town. Mulrine couldn’t offer a hard date for when the new Domino’s will open, but said it will be soon.
“They’re moving down across from the Goose Creek facility,†at the former site of Kay’s Country Store, he said. “They’re in renovation stage now. They’ll actually have sit-down eating, tables and booths. … It’s the first Domino’s sit-down eatery.â€
