DENTON 鈥 Mary Elizabeth Atwood, a Caroline County native, presented 鈥淎 3 Month Journey鈥 at the Foundry in Denton on Friday. The show exhibited art that Atwood worked on during a three-month period in the upstairs art room of the Foundry.
During that period, Atwood created more than 40 pieces of art. She said when she begins creating, she can鈥檛 stop.
鈥淭hree months of working, and once I start creating, I don鈥檛 know how to stop,鈥 Atwood said. 鈥... I meditate every day. So more like contemplation, so I don鈥檛 listen to something that鈥檚 just being still and I think that helps clear my mind and sometimes that鈥檚 how I paint also鈥 I will look at the canvas, and then I鈥檒l just go and pick out the paints, put them on beside the canvas, and then pretty much I know what I鈥檓 going to do.鈥
Along with presenting her art pieces, Atwood performed another form of art, presenting multiple poems. Atwood says her writing process is the same as her painting process, except for one major part.
鈥淚t鈥檚 almost the same thing except I can鈥檛 sit down and just write,鈥 Atwood said. 鈥淚 have to have a pen and paper beside me and pencil and paper, even when we鈥檙e traveling, because if something hits me, I have to write it down. Just a line.鈥
Atwood finished the paintings within the first month and a half in the art studio of the Foundry, but before that she also starting creating archetype figures to be presented as well. According to Atwood, those figures represent a season in life everyone man or woman may experience.
George Karos II, executive director of the Foundry, says artist like Atwood, who participate in the artist in residence program, bring exposure to the Foundry.
鈥淚n terms of visibility, branding, it opens up opportunities for us to not only be known as a little green building with the guitar player out front,鈥 Karos said.
