DENTON 鈥 Caroline County Board of Education members unanimously voted in favor of the North Caroline High site for the new location for Lockerman Middle School.
The approval came at the board鈥檚 meeting Aug. 5. The site puts the new middle school right next to North Caroline High School, giving the county its second location with a middle school and high school on the same property.
The North Caroline High site will allow 15.52 acres of space for the build of Lockerman Middle. The exact location of the building on the site has not been determined yet.
At the previous Board of Education meeting in July, multiple reasons came forward on why the North Caroline High site was recommended over a Double Hills Road site that was also being considered.
鈥淪ome of the highlights that came out throughout the analysis and the surveys was, again, the infrastructure. If you鈥檙e not spending a lot of money on that, the site readiness, the educational alignment, a lot of really exciting ideas came out during the community meeting of ways that you could really have mentorships and things like that with the older and the younger students being on one site,鈥 said Robyn Toth, architect for the new school, in July.
Reason included the ability to share space for events at North Caroline High.
鈥淭here鈥檚 clear paths for the indoor and outdoor activities,鈥 Toth said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 no crossing of streets, lots of capabilities there also because you are sharing more spaces鈥 There were some concerns about large events and right now, if they鈥檙e at Double Hills or if they鈥檙e at Lockerman now, where do we go for these large events? That don鈥檛 happen that often and you don鈥檛 necessarily need to build more space that the state鈥檚 not going to support. Well, you鈥檝e got a high school right there that鈥檚 got a large auditorium. .鈥
Bill Mengel, director of operations for Caroline County Public Schools, said the only concern with the North Caroline High site is the solar array on the property. The county has been in conversation with Tesla to purchase the solar array. No official purchase has been made yet.
To purchase the solar panels on the property, it would cost about $180,000, which doesn鈥檛 include the cost of relocation.
Board members said the decision on the location was a very early step in a marathon of decisions before the new school will be built.
