DENTON — Through the first five days of early voting, the Caroline County Board of Elections has seen almost 600 residents come out and cast their ballots.
On Thursday, June 11, 180 residents came out to vote, with turnout on Friday at 129. Activity at the polls dipped during the weekend — 55 residents voted Saturday and 47 cast ballots Sunday.
Monday, the fifth day of early voting, picked back up with the best day of 182 residents early voting.
Early voting runs through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m each day. Caroline County’s early voting center is at the Health and Public Services Building on 403 S. 7th Street in Denton.
Some residents walked inside the HAPS building in Denton on Tuesday morning to cast their primary ballots.
“I think voting is critical,†resident Tim Gunderson said. “I think everybody should take the opportunity to do what our forefathers gave us the right to do, and come out and vote.â€
Allison Murphy, Caroline County’s election director, said the early voting process has gone “smoothly†so far.
“Consider early voting,†Murphy said to residents. “Because we are here from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and it’s just another another option for voters who can’t make it on Election Day to their assigned poll in place. The early voting center is open to all Caroline County residents, and it’s essentially located within the county, so it is convenient.â€
Races of note include a three-way Republican contest for the clerk of Circuit Court seat, which has been competitive and heated, at times.
Meanwhile, four Republicans are vying to win the party’s three nominations for the Caroline County Commissioners. Travis Breeding, Linda Friday, Michael Mann and Larry Porter are on the ballot, as well as the lone Democrat, Savannah Winston, who automatically advances to the general election in November.
During the last midterm primary cycle in 2022 — also the last time the Caroline County Commissioners were up for reelection — 1,257 residents took the opportunity to vote early.
The county also saw 3,559 voters vote on primary Election Day in 2022.
