DENTON — One person was injured Friday after a tractor trailer rolled over on Route 404 in Denton, causing major backups with logs blocking the roadway.

The tractor trailer was traveling westbound on Route 404 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed the median, struck a car traveling eastbound and flipped over, police said. The crash occurred just before noon Friday near the highway’s intersection with Deep Shore Road.

A passenger in the car was injured and transported to a hospital in Seaford, Delaware, according to Denton Police Chief George Bacorn.

The drivers of the tractor trailer and car were not injured, Bacorn said.

A large portion of Route 404 eastbound in Denton remained closed as of 3 p.m Friday. Police directed drivers to use the Legion Road intersection near Walmart as a detour to 404 eastbound.

“I would expect that road to be closed for an extended period of time,†Bacorn said early Friday afternoon.

The trailer, turned on its side, left many large logs on Route 404 eastbound and in the median. It also damaged part of the eastbound guardrail.

The crash prompted a major cleanup response from firefighters, police, transportation officials and local cleanup companies.

Timber Harvest Inc., out of Cordova; Hoover & Son; and Jess Jr’s & Sons towing and recovery were among the companies on scene to help out. Crews worked on lifting the logs out of the roadway and median and onto a trailer, as well as clearing debris and turning over the wrecked tractor trailer.

Clearing efforts continued through the afternoon.

Police and transportation officials closed down Route 404 eastbound at the Legion Road intersection near the Denton Walmart shortly after the crash. The closure caused backups both eastbound and westbound near the Walmart intersection on a busy beach traffic Friday.

The portion of 404 eastbound near Deep Shore Road remained closed as of 3 p.m. Friday, but reopened later in the day.
