CHESTERTOWN — The Torch Run is the largest public awareness vehicle and grassroots fundraiser for the Special Olympics. Participating law enforcement members are called Guardians of the Flame, and annually more than 100,000 officers carry the “flame of hope.â€
On Monday morning, Chestertown Police Chief Ron Dixon and Det. Cpl. Chris Schwink carried that torch starting the eastern leg of that hopeful journey. The torch reaches its final destination at Towson University. That morning, joining local police were Kent County Department of Social Services Child Welfare and Adult Services staff.
After a short ceremony, 18 participants shared the torch along a mile route consisting of High Street, Mill Street, then along the Wayne Gilchrist Trail to Wilmer Park.
The torch arrives in Havre de Grace Thursday morning, passing through Harford County.
This is now Kent County’s third year of hosting the run.
