九色视频 鈥 The Easton Town Council on Monday approved a new school zone for Sts. Peter & Paul High School, a step officials say will bring the town closer to placing a speed camera near the school.

Council members voted 5-0 to approve an ordinance designating the new school zone, which will encompass all roads within half a mile of the high school.

Other schools in Easton already had with speed cameras thanks to a 2012 . At that time, the current Sts. Peter & Paul High campus 鈥 wedged between Route 50, Easton Parkway and South Washington Street 鈥 hadn鈥檛 been built.

The high school is surrounded by fast-moving vehicular traffic, though it鈥檚 fairly set back from the roads. Still, safety concerns have been raised in recent weeks due to multiple fatal crashes in town this year.

In October, a man riding a bike was killed in what police said was a hit-and-run crash at Route 50 and Woodridge Drive. That same intersection saw a pedestrian struck and killed in February.

Town officials, including council President Don Abbatiello and Police Chief Alan Lowrey, have lobbied for a speed camera to be placed on that portion of Route 50 to slow down traffic.

Designating the school zone around the nearby Sts. Peter & Paul High is step one, since cameras can only be placed in school and work zones per Maryland law. But the town still doesn鈥檛 have authority to place a speed camera since the roads surrounding the school are operated by the State Highway Administration.

In order to obtain that authority, the town must either ask SHA officials for a permit or receive special legislative approval from the Maryland General Assembly. Late last month, Lowrey asked state legislators representing the Eastern Shore to consider helping Easton out, though no final course of action was determined.

Before Monday鈥檚 vote, Town Attorney Sharon VanEmburgh ensured council members that the ordinance was a necessary measure on the path to placing a speed camera on Route 50.

鈥淭he first step is always establishing the school zone,鈥 she said.
