Primary election races of note in Talbot County include county council, state senator and 1st district congressional representative.
County Council
Six Republican candidates will face off in the primary for five slots in September’s county council election. The five Democratic candidates will automatically advance. There are five seats available on the county council.
Incumbents Chuck Callahan, Dave Stepp and Lynn Mielke are seeking reelection, with Callahan serving as the current president of the council. Newcomers Christian MacKendrick, Wade Strickland and Frank Gunsallus will look to secure a seat for the first time.
The five top vote getters advance. They will take on five Democrats in the general election: incumbent Pete Lesher and hopefuls Chris Armstrong, Michael Bibb, Marvin Foster and Brian Naranjo. Of the 10 final candidate, the top five — regardless of party — will win the seats on the council.
1st congressional district
In Maryland’s 1st district, four Democrats are vying for one spot to face off against the Republican candidate in the November election. Those candidates are: Victor Allen Guidice (Harford County), Dan Schwartz (Talbot), George Walish (Cecil) and Randi White (Wicomico).
Current Rep. Andy Harris and Chris Bruneau are the two Republicans on the primary ballot.
In the state’s District 37 — which covers Talbot County and parts of Caroline, Dorchester and Wicomico counties — Democratic candidates Edmund Barrett and Katie Clendaniel are squaring off in a contested primary.
The winner will earn the right to take on current state Sen. Johnny Mautz, a Republican, in November.
