九色视频 鈥 The Talbot County Board of Education approved the first step of a weapons detection technology plan at its meeting Wednesday.
The board unanimously approved the purchase of three metal detectors from Communications Technology, Inc. for nearly $72,500. The metal detectors will be installed at the Easton High School stadium and St. Michaels Middle High School sports complex and supervised by officers from Talbot County Sheriff鈥檚 Office.
The school district originally requested $800,000 in county funding to implement weapons detection technology at eight different entrances throughout the district.
After significant debate, the Talbot County Council funded half of the request and asked Talbot County Public Schools to pull the other $400,000 from its reserve funds as a show of good faith.
In a narrow decision, the school board ultimately voted against pulling more money from the district鈥檚 $8 million in reserves, citing the fact that nearly $3 million is already being used to keep up with inflated fixed costs like health insurance and retirement.
At Wednesday鈥檚 meeting, Superintendent Sharon Pepukayi said the remaining county funding will be 鈥渆armarked鈥 for future weapons detection endeavors.
鈥淚t鈥檚 heartbreaking that we have to expend these funds, but we have to keep our children safe as best we can at any point in time,鈥 board member Cynthia Jurrius said.
Jurrius also praised the pilot program for being an interim solution while the district waits for a weapons detection technology report from the Maryland Center for School Safety, expected to become available in December.
