WYE MILLS — Two people were injured in a serious motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Routes 50 and 404 Friday morning, according to police.

A Maryland State Police spokesperson said around 8:50 a.m. Friday, troopers responded to a crash involving a dump truck and tractor trailer in Wye Mills.

A preliminary investigation revealed the tractor trailer was traveling westbound and attempting to make a left turn onto Wye Mills Road when it was struck by a dump truck traveling eastbound, State Police said.

Video of the incident circulating online, via Maryland Department of Transportation’s live feed at the intersection, shows the tractor trailer turning left in front of the dump truck. The video did not clearly show whether the tractor trailer or dump truck had the right of way from the traffic signal at the intersection.

Bystanders rushed to the two vehicles to provide assistance, the video shows.

Drivers of both vehicles were flown to a local trauma center for their injuries, according to police. Neither vehicle had passengers. Their exact conditions were not immediately available late Friday morning.

Maryland Department of the Environment’s Emergency Response Division assisted at the scene with cleanup. The dump truck, carrying asphalt, toppled onto its side.

Environmental officials took steps to contain spilled fuel and protect storm drains from runoff, according to a on Friday.

Transportation officials assisted with major road closures in the Wye Mills area, police said. As of 4:15 p.m. Friday, all eastbound lanes reopened as well as one westbound lane.

Route 50 was shut down extensively in both directions for hours after the crash, with traffic backed up and detours posted.
