ANNAPOLIS 鈥 The Maryland General Assembly just concluded its scheduled spring session, but Democratic leaders are already looking ahead to an uncertain future driven by President Donald Trump鈥檚 鈥渃haos.鈥
In comments to reporters, Gov. Wes Moore boasted about the legislature鈥檚 accomplishments 鈥 stressing that Trump鈥檚 shadow still looms.
鈥淵ou cannot talk about those things without acknowledging the chaos that is taking place in Washington, D.C.,鈥 Moore told reporters.
Maryland could potentially lose the new FBI building it was supposed to get, while also facing stock market volatility and a tariff policy Moore described as a 鈥渘ational sales tax.鈥
鈥淲hile I鈥檓 thankful for the progress we鈥檝e made in this session, we know that protecting Marylanders, and caring for Marylanders and defending Marylanders does not happen over 90 days,鈥 Moore said.
Lawmakers in the waning hours of the session announced the formation of a Joint Federal Action Oversight Committee, a bipartisan group will be tasked with monitoring the ripple effects of the federal government on Maryland.
Senate President Bill Ferguson (D-Baltimore City) told reporters lawmakers have spent this session bracing for external threats.
鈥淲e have been working this year to protect the state of Maryland against the draconian slash and burn actions of the Trump administration,鈥 Ferguson said. 鈥淎nd with Elon Musk, who has been talking about efficiency, but really destroying Marylanders鈥 lives.鈥
Fear of Trump and Musk鈥檚 plans also loomed large in the minds of Democrats on the Senate floor, as debate heated up in advance of Monday鈥檚 midnight deadline for adjournment.
In a conversation about how to help laid-off federal workers, Sen. Jim Rosapepe argued that it鈥檚 hard to work out cost estimates in the current political climate.
鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to estimate this because we don鈥檛 know how much damage Mr. Musk and his merry band are going to do,鈥 said Rosapepe (D-Prince George鈥檚, Anne Arundel).
Senate Republican Leader Stephen Hershey (R-Kent, Queen Anne鈥檚, Cecil, Caroline) interrupted to say, 鈥淚 know, you鈥檝e said that a few times.鈥
Rosapepe raised his voice.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 the important point here,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 unclear what these people in Washington are doing to our state.鈥
鈥淲e know it鈥檚 bad,鈥 he said, 鈥渂ut we don鈥檛 know how bad it鈥檚 going to be.鈥
