The primary duty of the Talbot County Republican Central Committee leadership is to ensure that candidates carrying our banner genuinely represent the Republican platform. Our beloved former longtime chairman, the late Nick Panuzio, understood this implicitly. When I first joined the Committee and later served as vice chair, Nick made sure I understood that this often thankless responsibility requires sound judgment to protect the integrity of the party. That is exactly the kind of judgment Chairwoman Shari Wilcoxon is exercising today.

Those who call the Committee’s recent decision not to endorse Council Member Lynn Mielke “New York-style boss politics†ignore what Nick taught us: party leaders have a duty to defend and preserve the principles of the Republican Party. I stand with Chairwoman Shari Wilcoxon, who correctly pointed out in the Talbot Spy that Council Member Mielke’s repeated alignment with Democrat-led priorities is inconsistent with the conservative leadership needed to keep Talbot County on the right track.

These lapses in judgment are only reinforced by the political faction surrounding her. For the last three election cycles, Dan Watson, chair of the Talbot Integrity Project, has worked to divide Republicans and disrupt local governance through constant political attacks. According to the Maryland State Board of Elections, the Talbot Integrity Project spent $44,692.08 from July to December 2022 on coordinated media, mail, postage, printing, and campaign material expenditures. Those efforts supported a slate of candidates that included “Republicans†Lynn Mielke and David Montgomery, alongside several Democratic candidates for Talbot County Council.

It is no coincidence that Council Member Mielke’s positions on the Council frequently align with the agenda of one of her strongest political backers, Dan Watson. Republican primary voters have every right to question whether Council Member Mielke is exercising independent judgment or advancing the priorities of the political faction led by Dan Watson.

From my perspective, the Central Committee is not making power plays; it is exercising the judgment required to protect our values. Council Member Lynn Mielke’s record and political alliances demonstrate a pattern inconsistent with the Republican platform and the direction many Republican voters expect from their elected leaders.
