九色视频 鈥 The Neighborhood Service Center opened a new pop-up thrift shop last week in downtown Easton.

The nonprofit has been active since 1969, serving Talbot County residents experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, poverty and financial crisis. The event Thursday night paid homage to that history, when Walter Black cut the ribbon. Black鈥檚 mother, Dorothy Webb Black, founded the service center.

鈥淔olks come up to me and now, occasionally, and say, 鈥榊our mother gave me my first job,鈥欌 Black said.

Dorothy Webb Black worked serving the community for a long time. In 1964, she was commissioned by the Tri-County Community Action Agency to survey low-income residents of Talbot, Queen Anne鈥檚 and Kent counties. After these surveys, Black says his mother was inspired.

鈥淢y mother ran with the idea,鈥 Black explained. 鈥淚t got its name because one day she was coming out of Baltimore, and she saw this sign on a building that said, 鈥楴eighborhood Service Center.鈥 She borrowed the name.鈥

The original Neighborhood Service Center stood on East Dover Street, in a building near what's now the post office. At the time, a dentist owned the building, who allowed the service center to use the space free of charge.

The new thrift store on Dover Street is a similar situation, the service center鈥檚 Executive Director Andy Hollis said. The space is owned by Richard and Amy Marks, who suggested the pop-up thrift utilize the building for free.

Hollis explained the new store is just another way for the Neighborhood Service Center to accommodate the daily 鈥渂read line鈥 of people seeking help.

鈥淚 get choked up talking about it because I just don鈥檛 think, in this day and time, we should be seeing that, and that number is growing,鈥 Hollis said. 鈥淪o all of this goes to help us supply food and services to those in need. (Anything) we sell here is 100% going to that cost.鈥

Black validates the modern service center鈥檚 dedication to his mother鈥檚 cause. In her day, Webb Black worked tirelessly to help Talbot County residents via a food bank, children鈥檚 summer programs, clothing drives, shelters and job placement services.

Now, 16 years after his mother鈥檚 death, her son says her presence still guides the Neighborhood Service Center in serving the community she so dearly loved.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a legacy of my mother,鈥 Black said. 鈥淚 will go out to the graveyard out on Hamlet Street and tell her about this. Her tombstone says 鈥 鈥楥ommunity activist, civil rights advocate and humanitarian.鈥 That鈥檚 what鈥檚 on there. And that鈥檚 who she was and that鈥檚 what she was.鈥

The Neighborhood Exchange is located at 25 East Dover Street in Easton. Beginning May 9, it will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
