CENTREVILLE — Looking up throughout Centreville, passersby can spot portraits of hometown citizens who answered the call of duty.
Hometown Hero banners proclaiming the service and sacrifice of local residents now wave above the streets, thanks to the dedication of one woman honoring her son.
Centreville’s Hometown Heroes Banner Program was created by Leah Hall in memory of her son, Sgt. Jason Mileo, U.S. Marine Corps, who was killed in action in Iraq in 2003 during the Global War on Terror.
Hall said she hopes everyone in Centreville — even those just passing through — will take a moment to remember and honor those who serve.
“The people we are honoring have made great sacrifices to serve in the armed forces, and they deserve our honor and respect,” Hall said.
With the full support of the American Legion Jeff Davis Post 18, Hall began the project in January 2024, when her request to the Centreville Town Council was approved that same evening. The only delay came in securing permission to use Delmarva Power poles, which took nearly a year, Hall said.
A town ceremony in September officially unveiled the first set of 15 banners, followed by a second round of 17, for a total of 32 banners now displayed throughout Centreville.
A third round is currently in the works, and banner applications are available at the Jeff Davis American Legion Post 18 in Centreville.
