LILY TIERNEY/STAR DEMOCRATCAMBRIDGE 鈥 Last week, the City of Cambridge hosted a charette to devise a new and improved comprehensive plan.
The charette was a weeklong intensive and interactive public session where Planning Director Brian Herrmann, alongside a planning committee from consulting firm Able City, began to capture a vision of Cambridge鈥檚 future.
The new plan outlined five main ideas: make downtown vibrant and multi-generational, encourage great places beyond downtown, reinvent lost Main Street areas, increase waterfront access and recreational amenities, and build a sustainable and equitable future.
The last time the city came up with a comprehensive plan was in 2011. They planned to re-address it in 2021, but due to the pandemic, that never happened.
Under Maryland law, cities must update their comprehensive plans every 10 years to reflect the community鈥檚 current needs.
Individuals on the planning team specialize in a variety of development topics, ranging from economic development and housing to transportation.
During the weeklong session, there was strong community engagement, said Jason King, a city planner with Able City.
鈥淭his week, we started off with that hands-on design session 鈥 135 plus people, 18 tables, two and a half hour event. It was an epic,鈥 King said. 鈥淔or the city of 13,035 people, you know, we ran out of surveys, and we didn鈥檛 have enough pens.鈥
King said this kind of turn out is expected in a city of 100,000 residents.
Planners and city officials will continue to work on the comprehensive plan in the coming months before submitting a final version to the state.
