Members of the Rotary Club of Cambridge held a recent meeting at the Cambridge-Dorchester Regional Airport. During the meeting, Airport Manager Steve Nuwer provided the Rotarians with some history of the airport and plans for the future.
Originally established in 1936, the airport was called Cambridge Field. Starting as a grass field, it later became a grass runway with its first paving in 1955-56. In 1970, the runway received the first extension, followed by an addition in 2005, bringing it to the current 4,476 feet.
Nuwer told the Rotarians, there has been a study done to bring the runway to at least 5,000 feet. The increased distance will allow for larger jets to land at the airport, which will increase business, he said. Nuwer also said they would like to increase hanger space to attract more business for both short-term and long-term use.
Owned by Dorchester County, the Cambridge-Dorchester Regional Airport and management answer to both the Federal Aviation Administration and the Maryland Aviation Administration for regulations and guidelines.
In recent years, the airport has been putting fences around the perimeter of the property. The plan is to complete this project in the near future. The fence was constructed to attempt to keep deer off the runway.
An attraction for pilots arriving is the restaurant in the main building. Operated by Carol’s Kitchen, it provides a place for guests visiting as well as the community to enjoy a meal.
