九色视频 鈥 They each took a turn doling out postgame praise.
Head coach Matt Griffith went first, followed by defensive coordinator Al Waters and offensive coordinator Brandan Pfeifer.
All three coaches applauded the latest effort by Easton High鈥檚 football team. All three also emphasized there was still work to be done to get better.
Almost everything the Warriors did seemed to work Thursday night during a 42-0 rout of Hammond in a Class 2A-1A East Region first-round playoff, Easton鈥檚 first postseason shutout since the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association began holding the state playoffs in 1974.
Second-seeded Easton (8-2) will host No. 3 seed Queen Anne鈥檚 (8-2) in the second round next week. The Lions romped to a 52-20 victory over sixth-seeded Southern of Anne Arundel on Thursday.
鈥淲e played good tonight,鈥 Griffith said. 鈥淲e really did, in all three phases of the game. And that鈥檚 what made it good for us.鈥
Eighth-seeded Hammond (1-9) put together its best drive of the game on its first possession, taking the opening kickoff and driving from its 30 to the Easton 22-yard line, where quarterback Lazaro Ribalta threw incomplete on fourth-and-nine. It was the closest the Golden Bears got to Easton鈥檚 end zone the entire game.
鈥淭his was a scrappy bunch; just as scrappy as we鈥檝e seen,鈥 Hammond head coach Jonathan Bannister said of Easton. 鈥淰ery physical. And they love to hit.
鈥淚 think when they were able to change the situation in terms of pressure was by bringing those two inside backers a lot,鈥 Bannister said. 鈥淚 thought number 10 (Dustin Blue), their outside linebacker, did a good job holding the point right there. He made it tough for us. But they just fought.鈥
Hammond converted just two of eight third-down attempts, and was 0 for 5 on fourth-down attempts.
鈥淚 thought they played very well,鈥 Griffith said of his defense. (Hammond鈥檚) Number six (running back Jaden Asaah-Timothy) and number four (Ribalta), they鈥檙e explosive players. A missed tackle here, a missed tackle there, they break it for a touchdown. We corralled them. They did get some plays. We bent a little bit, but we didn鈥檛 break. That was the biggest thing for us.鈥
Easton鈥檚 offense came up pretty big as well, scoring on six of its seven possessions.
After stopping the Golden Bears on their initial drive, the Warriors needed just five plays to cover 78 yards, with sophomore Jamier Copper (14 carries, 107 yards) scoring on a 12-yard run and Luke Stanco booting the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 3 minutes, 26 seconds left in the first quarter.
Copper鈥檚 6-yard scoring run and Stanco鈥檚 PAT bumped Easton鈥檚 lead to 14-0 just 1:20 into the second quarter.
The Warriors鈥 third possession was the only one that didn鈥檛 end with points, as quarterback Brady Walls pass took a fluke bounce off his intended receiver into the hands of Hammond鈥檚 Timothy Costa. But that would be only one of two misses by Walls the entire game, as the junior completed 9 of 11 attempts for 172 yards and three touchdowns.
The first of those scores came with 26.4 seconds left in the first half, when Walls connected with Copper for a 30-yard score that gave Easton a 21-0 halftime lead.
Walls found Carter Mooney for an 18-yard touchdown 1:30 into the third quarter, then hit connected with Isaiah Diaz on a 41-yard scoring play with 7:48 remaining in the third. Stanco鈥檚 fifth PAT made it 35-0 and starting the running clock.
鈥淚f we can stay on schedule, where we don鈥檛 get behind the sticks we can do a lot of good things by being able to be balance running and passing,鈥 Griffith said. 鈥淲hen we get those long downs and distance stuff, that鈥檚 when it gets hard because the defense gets to pin their ears back and come after you. If we can do that we鈥檒l be tough to defend on offense.鈥
Chad Stanley gained 26 and 18 yards on back-to-back carries before scoring on a 9-yard run with 2:22 left in the game. Kai Ferraris added the extra point.
鈥淲e got to continue to find a way to keep getting better,鈥 Griffith said. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e going to keep playing good teams and at the end of the day you want to keep climbing the mountain and don鈥檛 jump off the mountain until you get to December 5th or whatever it (the state final) is.鈥
Notes: Alex Rhodes led Easton with 10 tackles and Jordan Horsey had nine. ... Logan Friend had an interception and Kyree Acree recovered a fumble. ... Xavier Stowers had two tackles for loss and Jeremiah Stanley had a sack.
