DENTON 鈥 In 2024, scout Billy Quick of Denton Troop 165 came up with the idea of participating in Wreaths Across America.
Now, the Denton Rotary, with the help of Troop 165 and Sons of American Legion Squadron 29, will continue the event for the fallen veterans of Caroline County.
According to Troop 165 Leader Walt Palmer, Quick鈥檚 proposal came as an Eagle Scout project for Denton Troop 165.
鈥淚t was pretty much Billy entirely, since he had to do it for his project,鈥 Palmer said. 鈥淗e had to lead it to be an Eagle project, he pretty well took the lead and really organized the whole thing. But this year, since he鈥檚 a Eagle Scout and he鈥檚 off at college, the Rotary is kind of picking up a lot of what Billy had done last year. Billy鈥檚 mom is one of the Rotary members, so that helps,鈥 Palmer said.
According to Wreaths Across America鈥檚 website, the initiative was started by Morrill Worcester in 1992. Today, more than 2 million volunteers participate across 5,200 locations in the United States and abroad. The initiative involves putting wreaths on the graves of veterans around the holidays.
Julie Quick, Billy鈥檚 mom, acknowledges what her son started in the community, but she said she wants the focus to be on what veterans have done for the country.
鈥淚t鈥檚 really not about anything one person did, it鈥檚 about our veterans and coming together as a community to see that,鈥 Julie said. 鈥... I think beyond just veterans鈥 education and understanding, what our veterans have given us and the freedom to really establish that connection that this is why we鈥檙e here, people who fought and died to give us this community, to give us our home. So, that鈥檚 sort of bigger picture.鈥
The National Wreaths Across America Day is on December 13. The Denton Rotary will hold a ceremony at noon at the Denton Cemetery.
鈥淭his project is important to me and fellow Rotarians. Not only does it commemorate, it reminds us all, especially younger generations, of the legacy that each veteran has left behind,鈥 Denton Rotary President Sue Simmons said.
The partnership with Troop 165 and Sons of American Legion Squadron 29 will tap the strengths of each organization to get the work done.
鈥淩otary of Denton, they鈥檝e been doing the flags for heroes for quite a number of years now, veterans honoring our veterans is one of something that鈥檚 very important to them,鈥 Julie Quick said. 鈥淭he Sons of the American Legion for years now mark graves for Memorial Day. They serve as the lynch pin of everything that happens for veterans in our community. Then Walt Palmer鈥檚 troops were also very helpful last year. They came out, they helped with everything.鈥
In addition to Wreaths Across America in Denton, Troop 165 helps with Greensboro鈥檚 committee that participates in Wreaths Across America as well.
鈥淲e help out with both Denton and Greensboro,鈥 Palmer said. 鈥 Greensboro has a committee that does it, in fact, one of their really active members on their committee is one of our parents.鈥
Having that experience with Greensboro has helped make learning process easier in Denton, Julie Quick said.
鈥淚t was really neat to use that experience to be able to tap into the knowledge base that the group had for Greensboro to help get us established and get this going here in Denton,鈥 she said. 鈥淪o it鈥檚 just really neat to see the troop grow in that way to move from supporting one to two and it would be great in the future if we can, get more locations across Caroline County for this event.鈥
Residents interested in volunteering to lay wreaths can visit . The Denton Rotary said the free community event is open to all. For more information, contact project coordinators Sue Simmons or Julie Quick at at dentonrotary21629@gmail.com or via phone at 410-924-7914.
